AMERU LEADERS URGE CLERGY TO PROMOTE CIVIC EDUCATION, DEMAND ACCOUNTABILITY

Leaders from the Meru community in Isiolo have urged the clergy to take a more active role in promoting civic education and advocating for increased accountability from elected officials.
Addressing the press after a prayer meeting for the blessing of newly elected community leaders from Tigania,Igembe,Tharaka Nithi and Imenti Subtribes of the Ameru community living in Isiolo that was held in Isiolo town, the leaders expressed concerns over what they described as a lack of development and transparency among those in public office.
Bishop Sammy Mwithali of Jesus Winner Ministry, who led the prayer session, aligned with the community leaders in condemning the conduct of local leadership. He emphasized the need for unity among community stakeholders in demanding better governance and improved service delivery.
The chairperson of the Ameru Turiamwe group, Paul Mugambi, criticized Members of the County Assembly for failing to fulfill their oversight responsibilities, a shortcoming he linked to poor service delivery in the region. He noted widespread public frustration with the current state of leadership and underscored the need for change.
Paul Kimathi added that the county administration under the current governor had contributed to feelings of exclusion among residents due to inadequate access to essential services.
Stephene Ngeera pointed to the poor condition of roads and the absence of support during recent floods in Isiolo town as further evidence of leadership failure. He highlighted the lack of response from government officials despite the destruction of property caused by the floods.
The leaders collectively called on the clergy to enhance civic awareness among residents and to hold public officials accountable for their performance in office.
