Isiolo Governor Abdi Guyo Impeached Amid Tensions and Street Clashes

Isiolo County Governor Abdi Ibrahim Guyo was officially impeached on Thursday afternoon, following a swift sitting conducted in a hurry at the Isiolo county Assembly.

The impeachment proceedings, which lasted less than 30 minutes, took place under tight security, with Members of County Assembly (MCAs) arriving at the Assembly compound amid heavy police presence. Outside, tensions boiled over as supporters of the governor clashed with those advocating for his removal, leading to several hours of street battles.

Running confrontations between the rival groups, marked by stone-throwing and chaos along the assembly route, persisted for close to six hours. Medical officials at Galaxy Hospital confirmed that four people sustained injuries during the unrest. Three were treated and discharged, while one was referred to Meru for specialized care.

Approximately one hour after the MCAs departed the Assembly, the official Isiolo County Assembly Facebook page confirmed the news, stating:

“In a momentous sitting today, the County Assembly of Isiolo officially passed the motion to impeach H.E. Governor Abdi Ibrahim Guyo, marking a significant shift in the county’s leadership.
Out of the 18 MCAs, 16 were present and voted unanimously in favor of the impeachment motion. Two members did not attend the session. No votes were cast against the motion.

The Governor, despite being formally invited to appear before the Assembly to respond to allegations against him, failed to attend. His absence was noted, and the House proceeded in line with Standing Orders and applicable legal frameworks.

The Assembly emphasized that the decision followed extensive public consultations, legal review, and debate across all ten wards, reflecting what it described as a strong commitment to transparency, accountability, and the rule of law.

Pursuant to Article 181 of the Constitution and Section 33 of the County Governments Act, the Speaker of the County Assembly will now forward the resolution to the Speaker of the Senate, which will determine the final fate of Governor Guyo’s leadership.

In a swift response through his press secretary, Governor Guyo issued a press statement contesting the validity of the impeachment. He claimed the process violated existing court orders and vowed to challenge the move through legal channels.

As the matter now proceeds to the Senate, the political temperature in Isiolo remains high.

Two vehicles parked outside the assembly building  were vandalized and multiple window panes smashed in the aftermath of the impeachment as youths stormed the assembly.

Many documents were strewn on the floor and it is yet to be known the full extent of the damage as at now.
