ISI0LO LEADERS DEMAND REMOVAL OF SAMBURU HERDERS FROM GRAZING AREAS AMID INSECURITY AND RISING TENSION

Isiolo Governor Abdi Guyo and Woman Representative Mumina Bonaya have issued the national government a two-day ultimatum to remove herders from Samburu County who are currently grazing in Isiolo, following rising tension after the killing of two people.

On Sunday, three people were shot by suspected Samburu herders near Kuro Bisan. Two of the victims succumbed to their injuries, while the third is still receiving treatment.

Governor Guyo and MP Bonaya met with Isiolo herders in the affected area, where they delivered the ultimatum. They said the decision was reached after consultations with national government leaders.

Governor Guyo warned that killings within Isiolo grazing lands will not be tolerated, especially by people from outside the county who have sought refuge due to drought in their regions. He emphasized the need for a clear strategy to guide herders seeking pasture and water in Isiolo.

MP Bonaya said the insecurity was unacceptable, noting that in just over a month, more than nine people have been killed by suspected Samburu herders. She insisted that if Samburu livestock must return home, the process should follow the law.

Community elder Jattani Huka noted that more than 100,000 livestock are currently in the area, putting immense pressure on already strained pasture resources and fueling recurring conflicts.

Another resident, Abdub Roba, urged the government to ensure stolen livestock are recovered and that all animals from Samburu are returned. He added that tensions between local residents and the visiting herders remain high following the recent killings.
