Fred Matiang’i Set to Tour Nyamira as 2027 Presidential Bid Speculation Mounts

Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i is scheduled to kick off a tour of Nyamira County on May 2, 2025, amid growing speculation that he may launch a bid for the presidency in 2027.
While Matiang’i has yet to formally announce his candidacy, he has been actively engaging with various leaders and stakeholders in recent weeks. His upcoming visit to his home region is expected to further signal his political intentions.
Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo confirmed the tour, describing it as a critical step in consolidating local support and consulting with regional leaders.
“Our presidential candidate, Fred Matiang’i, will begin his journey in Gusii on May 2,” said Nyaribo. “He will start at 9 a.m. in Nyasiong’o and proceed through Keroka, Kiumbu, Kisii Roundabout, and Ikonge Market.”
Governor Nyaribo praised Matiang’i as a leader who values peace and community input. He emphasized that Matiang’i’s path to the presidency would begin with blessings and guidance from his home region.
He also called on residents to turn out in large numbers to show support and engage with Matiang’i during the tour.
A traditional installation ceremony is expected to take place soon at Gusii Stadium, where Gusii community elders will formally endorse Matiang’i as a key leader from the region. The event is anticipated to attract prominent political figures from across the country.
Since returning to Kenya recently, Matiang’i has kept a low public profile and has not yet commented on the widespread rumours surrounding his presidential ambitions.
However, on April 29, he made a notable appearance at a high-level opposition strategy meeting in Nairobi. The gathering, which included former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, marked Matiang’i’s first public interaction with Gachagua’s camp.
The meeting, aimed at laying the groundwork for a united opposition front in 2027, also brought together key figures such as Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, PLP’s Martha Karua, DAP-K’s Eugene Wamalwa, Mukhisa Kituyi, and former Cabinet Secretaries Mithika Linturi and Justin Muturi.
