ISIOL0 ELDERS URGE MCAS TO EMBRACE DIALOGUE WITH GOVERNOR AHEAD OF IMPEACHMENT MOTION

A group of elders from various communities in Isiolo County have called for constructive dialogue between embattled Governor Abdi Guyo and Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) ahead of an impeachment motion scheduled for debate next Tuesday.
The elders, many of whom are supporters of Governor Guyo, described the planned impeachment as premature and ill-informed, warning that it could deepen divisions and erode trust among the county’s diverse communities.
Ekuam Tero, a former Ngaremara MCA and elder from the Turkana community, alleged external political interference in the push to oust the governor. He cautioned that such actions could jeopardize the fragile peace among Isiolo residents.
Tero emphasized that Governor Guyo had previously enjoyed a working relationship with the county assembly and blamed the current fallout on influences from outside the county.
Echoing these sentiments, Gabra elder Omar Godana appealed to President William Ruto and the Senate Committee on Devolution and Intergovernmental Relations to intervene. He stated that community elders were prepared to mediate and foster dialogue between the governor and the MCAs in a bid to restore unity.
Idle Hassan, another elder, urged the MCAs to treat impeachment as a last resort. He called on them to explore all other conflict resolution mechanisms before resorting to such a drastic measure.
Community member Josylin Kagendo added that any decision made by the MCAs must reflect the will and interests of the people they represent. She encouraged the assembly to exercise their oversight role responsibly and with the public good in mind.
The impeachment motion against Governor Guyo was introduced on Tuesday, citing allegations of gross misconduct, abuse of office, and violations of constitutional provisions. Specific accusations include failure to renew the contracts of 20 chief officers while renewing only five under questionable circumstances.
Additionally, the governor is accused of appointing 36 advisors and 21 chief officers despite Isiolo receiving one of the lowest budget allocations in the country. He also faces criticism for allegedly making demeaning and sexist remarks toward Isiolo Senator Fatuma Dullo during a Madaraka Day event in Oldonyiro.
As the county awaits Tuesday’s proceedings, the elders continue to push for reconciliation, stressing the importance of peace and unity in Isiolo’s multi-ethnic society.
