Over 200 Matatu drivers in Isiolo participated in a road safety sensitization seminar organized by local traffic police in collaboration with Meru Isiolo (MEISO) Sacco. The event aimed to educate drivers on road safety regulations and proper conduct towards passengers.

The training was initiated in response to rising concerns over misconduct among Matatu operators, including violations of basic road safety measures that often result in accidents. Officials emphasized the importance of adhering to traffic laws and maintaining professionalism in their service to the public.

In addition to road safety education, the drivers were also enrolled in the government’s Social Health Authority (SHA) medical insurance scheme during the seminar. This initiative seeks to provide Matatu drivers with accessible and affordable healthcare services.

Philip Lang’at, the county traffic police enforcement officer, commended the drivers for their willingness to participate and their commitment to discipline in their profession. He stressed that such refresher courses are crucial in reducing road accidents and improving transport services.

Mohamed Dahir, an official from MEISO Sacco, urged the government to streamline the services of SHA to ensure that members and their beneficiaries receive timely and efficient medical assistance when needed.

Paul Kinyua, chairman of MEISO Sacco, highlighted the benefits of the refresher course, noting that it served as a reminder to drivers of their responsibilities in keeping the roads safe for all users. He emphasized that the training aligns with the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) regulations, which require drivers to undergo regular refresher courses to maintain high road safety standards.

The seminar marked a significant step towards enhancing road safety awareness among Matatu operators in Isiolo, fostering a culture of responsibility and professionalism within the public transport sector.
