Standard Group PLC Ushers in a New Era with Appointment of Chief Executive Editor Chaacha Mwita

The Standard Group PLC has announced the appointment of Chaacha Mwita as its new Chief Executive Editor (CEE), entrusting him with the responsibility of leading the organization’s content production and strategic direction.

With over two decades of experience in journalism, leadership, and communication across local and international landscapes, Mwita brings a wealth of expertise to the role. A respected media professional, he has been instrumental in building editorial capacity in newsrooms throughout Africa.

Speaking on Thursday, April 3, Standard Group CEO Marion Mwangi expressed confidence in Mwita’s ability to steer the media house into a new chapter focused on digital growth and journalistic excellence.

“Chaacha’s extensive background as a journalist and media strategist is a significant asset to our organization,” said Mwangi. “His appointment underscores our commitment to innovation, bold storytelling, and independent journalism.”

She added that as the company continues its transformation journey, Mwita’s deep-rooted experience in policy engagement and communication will play a vital role in shaping the Group’s future.

In his remarks, Mwita emphasized the urgency of embracing a digital-first approach to journalism.

“My foremost priority is to align The Standard Group with the habits of today’s audience—who primarily consume news digitally,” he said. “I envision a full transition to a digital-first newsroom that is agile, responsive, and audience-focused.”

He also underscored the importance of investing in investigative reporting, research, and technology to empower journalists and meet evolving audience needs.

“To truly serve our readers, we must equip our teams with the tools and training necessary for excellence,” Mwita noted. “Journalism may evolve, but its core value—delivering credible, accurate information—remains unchanged.”

John Bundotich, Acting Editor-in-Chief, welcomed Mwita’s return, citing his contributions to media freedom and innovation.

“Chaacha has consistently championed press freedom, notably during pivotal moments such as the 2006 advocacy efforts. His return is timely as we continue modernizing our newsroom—a transformation that began in 2021,” said Bundotich.

Mwita’s impressive career spans multiple African countries, where he has led media assessments in Kenya, South Africa, Mozambique, Botswana, Tanzania, and more. He has held senior roles in reputable institutions, including previous leadership positions at Standard Group PLC, Nation Media Group, Aga Khan Foundation, APHRC, and the Thomson Foundation in London.

His international engagements include advisory roles on panels such as Africa Means Business, as well as collaborations with institutions like Oxford University’s CSAE, the African Economic Research Consortium, Strathmore Business School, and the University of Ghana.

Academically, Mwita holds a Bachelor of Education (Arts) and a Postgraduate Diploma in Mass Communication from the University of Nairobi, alongside an MBA from the University of St. Gallen in Switzerland.

He is also a published author and former Fanning Fellow for Journalism at the Kettering Foundation in the U.S., having led several high-impact consultancies with organizations such as Internews and UNICEF, focusing on media development, social accountability, and capacity building.
