Turkana Professionals Demand Apology Over Remarks on IEBC Chair Nominee

Professionals from the Turkana community in Isiolo County are demanding an apology from politicians Martha Karua, Kalonzo Musioka, and political analyst Mutahi Ngunyi over comments made regarding the newly nominated IEBC chairperson, Erastus Ethekon.

The professionals have accused the three of making tribal and insulting remarks aimed at Ethekon, who hails from the Turkana community. They described the remarks as discriminatory and disrespectful to their community.

In a joint press statement, spokesperson Grace Lorim urged the National Cohesion and Integration Commission to investigate the statements, which she said demean the Turkana people and undermine their rightful place in Kenya’s national fabric.

Lorim cited Karua’s comment suggesting that Ethekon is unfit for the position due to his background, describing it as demeaning and unacceptable.

Youth representative Wilson Cabon emphasized that Kenya belongs to all citizens and that such sentiments damage the spirit of national unity.

Pastor Sammuel Elupe expressed gratitude to President William Ruto for nominating Ethekon, calling it a positive sign that all communities have the potential to lead the nation. He warned that the Turkana community would stage demonstrations to demand an apology if none is forthcoming.

Zachary Zileta called on the law society of Kenya which Martha Karua and Kalonzo musioka are members to distance the organization from their statements.
